Electrical Wiring Shop Safety Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

Objective: The objective of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Electrical Wiring Shop at DMRSTI. This SOP aims to provide guidelines and protocols to maintain a secure environment for electrical wiring and construction activities, protect equipment, and ensure the safety of shop users.

Responsibilities:

  1. Shop Supervisor:
  • Overall responsibility for shop safety and maintenance.
  • Conduct regular inspections and ensure the functionality of equipment.
  • Provide training and guidance to shop users on safety protocols.
  • Investigate and report safety incidents and equipment malfunctions.
  • Manage access to the shop and enforce shop rules.
  1. Shop Technicians:
  • Assist the shop supervisor in enforcing safety rules.
  • Conduct safety briefings and training for shop users.
  • Ensure that safety equipment is available and functional.
  • Provide technical support for shop users.
  • Report unsafe conditions and incidents promptly.
  1. Students and Shop Users:
  • Follow all safety guidelines and protocols.
  • Attend safety training sessions as required.
  • Report unsafe conditions, accidents, or incidents to shop staff.
  • Use shop equipment and facilities responsibly.
  • Adhere to shop schedules and respect fellow users.

Equipment List:

  1. Electrical wiring tools (pliers, wire strippers, screwdrivers, etc.)
  2. Power drills and drill bits
  3. Electrical conduit and fittings
  4. Electrical wires and cables
  5. Junction boxes and electrical panels
  6. Circuit breakers and switches
  7. Outlet boxes and receptacles
  8. Lighting fixtures
  9. Ladders and scaffolding (if applicable)
  10. Personal protective equipment (PPE) – safety glasses, hard hats, gloves, etc.
  11. Fire extinguishers
  12. Emergency exit signs and evacuation routes
  13. First aid kit
  14. Security cameras
  15. Access control system
  16. Fire alarm system
  17. Cable management solutions
  18. Signage for shop rules and safety guidelines

Safety Guidelines:

  1. Personal Safety:
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Avoid running or engaging in any behavior that could lead to accidents within the shop.
  • Do not tamper with electrical outlets, cables, or equipment.
  • Report any damaged or malfunctioning equipment to shop staff immediately.
  1. Fire Safety:
  • Keep flammable materials away from electrical equipment and open flames.
  • Familiarize yourself with the location and use of fire extinguishers.
  • In case of a fire, follow evacuation procedures and use fire extinguishers only if trained to do so.
  1. Electrical Safety:
  • Do not overload electrical circuits. Use appropriate circuit breakers and switches.
  • Avoid using damaged electrical wires or cables.
  • Turn off power sources before working on electrical circuits.
  1. Equipment Use:
  • Use electrical wiring tools and equipment only for their intended purpose.
  • Do not attempt to repair or modify equipment without proper authorization and training.
  • Inspect tools and equipment for damage before use.
  1. Tool Safety:
  • Use hand and power tools safely and appropriately, following manufacturer guidelines.
  • Keep tools organized and return them to their designated storage areas after use.
  • Report any damaged or missing tools.
  1. Working at Heights (if applicable):
  • Use ladders or scaffolding safely, following safety guidelines.
  • Ensure that ladders are stable and positioned on level surfaces.
  • Do not stand on the top rung of a ladder.
  1. Data Privacy:
  • Respect the privacy of others and do not engage in unauthorized data access or recording.
  1. Security and Access Control:
  • Do not allow unauthorized individuals into the shop.
  • Report any suspicious activity or individuals to shop staff.
  • Follow access control procedures, including sign-in/sign-out processes.

  1. Regularly inspect and maintain electrical wiring tools and equipment to ensure their safety and functionality.
  2. Conduct routine checks of electrical circuits to identify and address potential issues.
  3. Promote responsible usage of shop resources and adherence to safety guidelines among all users.
  4. Maintain an organized and clutter-free shop environment to reduce the risk of accidents.
  5. Ensure that emergency procedures and evacuation routes are clearly marked and regularly reviewed.
