Objective: The objective of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to establish comprehensive safety guidelines and protocols for ensuring the safety of all individuals working in the Basic Electrical and Electronics Laboratory at DMRSTI. This SOP aims to minimize the risk of accidents, injuries, equipment damage, and environmental hazards, creating a secure and productive working environment.
Responsibilities:
- Lab Supervisor:
- Overall responsibility for lab safety.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and maintain equipment.
- Provide training and guidance to lab users.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Investigate and report safety incidents.
- Lab Technicians:
- Assist the lab supervisor in enforcing safety rules.
- Conduct safety briefings and training for lab users.
- Ensure that safety equipment is available and functional.
- Report unsafe conditions and incidents promptly.
- Students and Lab Users:
- Follow all safety guidelines and protocols.
- Attend safety training sessions as required.
- Report unsafe conditions, accidents, or incidents to lab staff.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment as directed.
- Follow proper equipment usage and care procedures.
Equipment List:
- Workbenches with electrical outlets
- Multimeters and oscilloscopes
- Soldering stations and soldering irons
- Power supplies and voltage sources
- Breadboards and electronic components (resistors, capacitors, etc.)
- Wiring and connectors
- Safety goggles and face shields
- Lab coats and gloves
- Fire extinguishers
- Emergency eye wash stations and showers
- First aid kit
- Electrical safety tools (insulation testers, continuity testers, etc.)

- Emergency exit signs and evacuation routes
Safety Guidelines:
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
- Lab coats, safety goggles, and gloves must be worn at all times while in the lab.
- Secure long hair, and avoid wearing loose clothing and jewelry that could pose a hazard.
- Closed-toed shoes with good grip are mandatory.
- Emergency Equipment:
- Familiarize yourself with the location of safety showers, eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, and first-aid kits.
- Know the evacuation routes and assembly points in case of an emergency.
- Electrical Safety:
- Never work on live circuits unless authorized and properly trained.
- Inspect electrical cords, plugs, and equipment for damage before use.
- Use appropriate insulation and testing tools when working with electrical circuits.
- Turn off and unplug equipment when not in use.
- Soldering Safety:
- Use soldering irons in designated areas with proper ventilation.
- Handle soldering equipment with care to prevent burns and electrical shock.
- Keep flammable materials away from soldering stations.
- Use fume extractors when soldering.
- Chemical Handling:
- Handle chemicals safely, following manufacturer instructions and wearing appropriate PPE.
- Label and store chemicals properly.
- Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in the lab.
- Wash hands thoroughly after handling chemicals.
- Equipment Use:
- Inspect electronic components and equipment for damage before use.
- Use tools and equipment only for their intended purpose.
- Report damaged equipment immediately for repair or replacement.
- Spills and Accidents:
- Report all spills, accidents, and injuries to the lab supervisor immediately.
- Use chemical spill kits as needed.
- If clothing catches fire, stop, drop, and roll to extinguish the flames.
Recommendations and Conclusions:
- Regularly review and update this SOP to incorporate changes in equipment, technology, or safety protocols.
- Conduct periodic safety drills and refresher training sessions to ensure all lab personnel are aware of emergency procedures.
- Promote a culture of safety within the lab, where everyone is encouraged to identify and address potential hazards promptly.
- Maintain an organized and clean lab environment to prevent accidents and improve efficiency.
- Strictly enforce safety rules and guidelines, and hold all lab users accountable for their adherence.
